Jazzakah Mapasa, SCOPE Permaculture Trainer, Event emcee, opening the event

By Stacia Nordin, NEF co-Founder.

The Nordin family, as Founders of NeverEndingFood (NEF), have partnered with Schools and Colleges Permaculture (SCOPE) in Malawi to develop NEF into a trust, aiming to have NEF as a “NeverEndingResource” for the community. On 2026 February 27, over 100 community members from Mtisunge C, TA Njewa, Lilongwe, gathered to…
👂🏽 hear from the NEF Founders about the changes,
🤔 learn about and meet the SCOPE team as the new NEF Trustees,
🗣️ discuss any questions or points that anyone has, and
🍽️ share a meal, take lots of photos, dance to the DJ’s music, and play games together.

At the beginning of the event, the people in the room were hesitant to speak. If you look at the photo with the emcee, Jazzakah, who is looking at ‘me’ the cameraperson, people were sitting in the room, quietly, mostly self-separated by sex, age, and status.

During the discussion, the questions were mostly asked by men and chiefs at first, such as: “NEF allowed us chiefs to use the classroom for meetings, will you continue?”

Three of the many Chiefs present enjoying their 6 food group meal planned and prepared by Gloria at SCOPE. We also had Hibiscus (Chidede juice), popcorn, and Samosas on arrival. ➡️ Left: Group Village Head Dikirani, ➡️ Middle: Gift, a Village Head from a different village, but who was an Intern at NEF before he was Chief ➡️ Right: Past Mtisunge C vice Chief, Mr. Matekera

SCOPE National Coordinator and NEF Trustee, Ms. Chifundo Jean Khokwa (see group photo at the end), fielded all questions with honesty and humility – and humour where it was called for 🤣.

When people saw we were serious about discussing anything they were thinking about, more people of different ages and sexes asked to speak. As the discussions continued, about 20 women, men, girls, and boys took the microphone to ask a question or make a comment about the positive impact that NEF has had on them.

Discussions continued through the meal (featuring all 6 food groups, almost all from Permaculture’s organic systems!), and the room was noisy with chatter, laughter, and music.

Guests helped with serving and cleaning up, and then we danced, and took literally 1,000 photos that I need to finish cleaning and put on the NeverEndingFood public Google Drive. Note: All photos & videos are shared with consent, which was provided after explaining the outreach that NeverEndingFood does online.

By the end of the event, we were the same people, but completely different, transformed by connecting, talking freely, and learning more about each other.

We left eager for this new phase! 💪🏾

Photo of the group (or most of the group) at the end of the discussion – just before dinner, dancing, and lots of photos! It was pouring rain outside, so we had to take the photo inside. Lucky for us the rain was short-lived, and we spent more than 2 hours taking photos, chatting, and eating. Stay tuned for more photos on our public Google Drive.
Some of the NEF-SCOPE new and old teams, described from the Left side of the photo to the Right. There are more people not shown here, like Nelson, the NEF night guard, who will be staying on with the new team.
➡️ Blue shirt Rabbecca, then Chrissie and Chifundo (SCOPE National Coordinator) with Chiyanjano behind her.
➡️ Roger and Fundo are in the front taking the photo.
➡️ Gloria with Archduke behind her (he also goes by Thoko since people struggle with his name!).
➡️ Ethel in the blue and red with Wezi in front of her and then me, Stacia (NEF co-Founder) to the far right (though politically I’m in the middle leaning left!).
The new and old NEF team stayed late playing cards and putting together a wooden puzzle.
Sorry for the plastic, that’s what the venue had. The things we brought had already been put away.
Hopefully, we can influence businesses to access items that are good for the planet and people…
..but businesses also struggle to get access to these items.
We need to all work together to add support and pressure where needed❣️
